Hotep (Peace) Usisahau Community!
As we journey through the rest of this month, let us consider June as a month to connect, celebrate and reflect. The upcoming Father’s Day holiday allows us to honor the powerful presence of fathers and father figures in our families and communities. Let us recognize fathers for their sacrifices, strength and selflessness. When discussing fatherhood, we will witness narratives that remind us of the importance of their viewpoints, values and voice. Whether they are with us physically or transitioned to the ancestral realm, may we continuously reflect on their lives and legacies with endearing love.

Regardless of efforts to distort the history of enslavement and its debilitating impact on people of African ancestry, on June 19th, pause to recognize Juneteenth. Many will gather at community events, award ceremonies, and tribute services to reflect and celebrate. These are perfect opportunities for intergenerational storytelling. Remember Usisahau translates to lest we forget, so we implore you to tell the stories, call the names of those persons who we should ALWAYS REMEMBER!

Please don’t forget that June is a celebration of Black Music Month. Consider the role music has played in our moments of joy and pain (RIP Frankie Beverly). Whether inspiring individuals or motivating movements, Black music has and continues to impact our lives through its multiple genres and messages.
